For the Postfix MTA, does anyone know how to turn off the addition of a Message-Id when one is not supplied? This is for relay only so there should be no need for the relay to add one.
Is this machine relaying from users' MUAs, or from some other SMTP server? That is, does the SMTP path look like this:
User MUA ---> SMTP Server ---> Your Postfix Box ---> final destination
or like this:
User MUA ---> Your Postfix Box ---> final destination
If the latter, then your Postfix box *should* be adding a Message-ID: header (though I'll admit RFC2821 specifies MAY).
If it's the former situation, then you're quite right that Message-ID: should not be added after the initial SMTP injection point. (However, I don't know how to configure Postfix. Sorry.)
