There was a nasty Linux NFS client bug between 2.4.20pre3 and 2.4.21
which could have caused symptoms like this; other symptoms would have
been spurious EIOs on the client end.

If you're using a Linux box with a kernel in that range as some of your
Bayes-updating boxes, you might want to try again with a newer kernel.
