Dan, I, too, had a great deal of trouble installing spamassassin. In the end I did the following: 1. installed my own version of perl with the necessary packages 2. edited the makefile after "configure" to change /etc /usr and friends. (I tried but failed to cause this to happen using parameters to configure.) I'm not positive that (1) was essential but it seemed to me that "make install" wanted to modify files in perl's installation paths. In any event it was easier to install perl 5.8.0 than to use the somewhat older version that was on my system. -- Gordon V.
