I'm running a Mandrake 9.0 machine, with qmail (as installed by LWQ.org) and
SA 2.55 site wide, using Bayes with auto learning enabled. The server is
just a gateway server, which then routes it's filtered email (Thank you VERY
much SpamAssassin!) to a POP server sitting behind it. The server behind it
has roughly 1000 users on it. Since the server has gone into full
production use, I have seen the following error in the SA logs quite often,
and have also seen it happening when using sa-learn. The error is:

Cannot open bayes_path /home/spamassuser/.spamassassin/bayes R/W: File
exists

That is the proper path, and bayes auto-learning does actually happen, as I
can see the bayes_msgcount increasing constantly, and the date and times on
the other bayes files are constantly updating, as well as the sizes
changing. Also, at any given time there are usually numerous lock files in
the bayes folder. As I write this now, there are 4 lock files.

Is this happening because too many processes are trying to update the bayes
database at once? Is there a way, besides shutting off auto-learn to stop,
or considerably limit how often these messages pop up?

BTW, in my opinion, the disk subsystem in this machine sucks. It's 2 IDE
drives, running at UDMA 66. I did my best to seperate the disk intensive
tasks between the disks, putting the SA database on one drive, and the qmail
queue on a seperate drive. If that is my problem, I will go back to the
person who supplied me this underpowered machine (because that's all he had
in his words) and let him know it needs to be upgraded. :-)

Thanks for any help you can give.

Chris
