FWIW I was a total n00b to linux about 1 year ago. I am still not even what I would consider a power user. It took me far longer to get sendmail auth working than MS and SA.
Now mind you my server is only serving 6 users and about 20 accounts on 3 domains. I'd say setup took me about 7 hours (sendmail, SA, MS and F-Prot). I spend very little time doing maintenance and my server current has been up for over 33 days and the entire mail subsystem has maybe been shut down a total of 5 hours for upgrades and my perl is botched (like I said a n00b who mixed RPM and src). That said I think the times are a bit much unless your IT guy either is unsure of himself or possibly is sure he doesn't understand it. All said and done I think the combination works well and you will find the small initial setup time investment is very much worth it. http://www.pcsites.com/scan/ has some stats for my system, but keep in mind that I just recently (about 2 weeks ago) switched from running spamd out of procmail to letting MS call it. So the spam score is skewed. Also only myself and my 10 or so accounts are running SA so the results don't reflect the entire site.. How much work is it to install and maintain a mailhost integrated with spam assassin for a company of about 40 employees. We have experience with sendmail and linux. My IT guy gives the following estimate. He's comparing this with the administrative cost for installing and running PureMessage. >-- Time estimates for an open source solution: > -- 60+ hours to setup and test sendmail/anti-virus/RBL/anti-spam >software from source. > -- 8 hours every month to verify that things are working and up to date > -- 8 hours every month to upgrade software (sendmail/RBL/virus/spam, all >different) > -- 8 hours of down time every month while working and testing -- -- Stephen Bannasch Director of Technology, Concord Consortium 10 Concord Crossing, Suite 300, Concord, MA 01742 direct: 978 371 3477, fax: 978 371 0696, main: 978 369 4367 http://www.concord.org mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: INetU Attention Web Developers & Consultants: Become An INetU Hosting Partner.
