I have SA running for my company of 56 fulltime users and about 20 part-timers. Linux/sendmail/procmail It took about an hour to install and configure. I was paranoid at first and only ran it on my account and my catch-all box for testing, I did that for 2 days to be sure of the program. I then turned it loose on my users and we have seen a 98% reduction in spam! No maintenance required, everyone checks their mail/spamtrap folders every couple of days to look for false positives and they drop false negatives in a shared folder that crons every 24hrs with sa-learn. The system has worked beautifully from the start and I couldn't be happier. (Well I could if spam went away :-))
Just my $.02 from a very happy Sysadmin
Scott
PS A great big thanks to all you folks doing the grunt development
Three cheers!

I have a question for the group. How much work is it to install and maintain a mailhost integrated with spam assassin for a company of about 40 employees. We have experience with sendmail and linux.

My IT guy gives the following estimate. He's comparing this with the administrative cost for installing and running PureMessage.

-- Time estimates for an open source solution:
-- 60+ hours to setup and test sendmail/anti-virus/RBL/anti-spam
software from source.
-- 8 hours every month to verify that things are working and up to date
-- 8 hours every month to upgrade software (sendmail/RBL/virus/spam, all
different)
-- 8 hours of down time every month while working and testing
