We are running Exim using spamassassin version 2.53 to scan all non-local mail with sitewide autowhitelisting enabled. Calls to spamassassin are made through spamd and this situation had happily persisted for a year, until today. Just before 12:00 GMT we noticed that mail was flowing very slow. On looking we could see many spamd child processes which were hanging (for over several minutes at least). I tried a number of things which failed to rectify the problem, stopping spamd and restarting the process would initially get the queues moving again but after a few minutes things would slow down or stop. Out of desperation I looked at the spamassassin user's .spamassassin directory and noticed that the auto-whitelist had grown to over 200MB. I deleted this and also the bayes database and things started to worked quickly again. The problem may have been due to either autowhitelisting or bayes but while I could see a mechanism for controlling the size of the bayes database I couldn't see something similar for auto-whitelisting. Have I missed something and how do others handle large autowhitelist files?
