This may not be quite on the mark, but is something I've been looking at, so will pass it along. There's a utility called 'fam', which has been contributed to the open source community by SGI. Fam monitors files for changes, and notifies clients when those files have been chaged: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/fam/faq.html#what_is_fam
