Thanks Matt. That's what I'd more or less guessed.

Based on purely personal impressions, watching headers and tactics, it
seems that the average spammer is of less than average intelligence. He
neither knows his subject, his target or his aim in full. The ultimate
example is the Nigeria-con spammer who might be presumed to have
invented a far more profitable con, had he/she been capable of it.
Though who knows? The maxim "there's one born every minute" might well
be true.

The exceptions are the innovators: base64 bodies, spamarrest.com,
single-line, single-url porn sites etc. Those will be on to something
new tomorrow and leave all 99% of the others behind.

"What makes them tick?" dreams of money, pestering, "cleverer than the
victim", revenge, something to do to alleviate boredom, feeling unloved,
wanting contact with others - what?

Best,

Tony
