[Apologies in advance that some of this is off-topic.] I'm not entirely convinced. RFC2822 states that the name of an "optional-field" consists of 'a sequence of characters, not including "controls" (i.e. ASCII 0-31), "space" (i.e. ASCII 32) or ":" (ASCII 58)'. (section 3.6.8) This implies that a header called "MIME-Version" (for example) is not the same as one called "MIME(foo)-Version". Of course, the content of an "optional-field" can be anything. (I don't by any means claim that this is an authoritative interpretation of the standard.) To be honest, the standards for mail headers are far too permissive in terms of what's allowed and how it may be formatted. Perhaps some day someone will sit down and draft an RFC for a simplified format which will remove a lot of the superfluous junk. For example, to take one of the RFC822 examples, do we really need To: Muhammed.(I am the greatest) Ali @(the)Vegas.WBA to be legitimate, when you'd normally just write To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Obviously any new standard would have to be written to ensure that mail in the simplified format was still legitimate according to 822/2822 (for compatibility). This is strictly off-topic, though, for this list.
