Do any of your custom rules contain a "#"? "#" starts a comment in local .cf files unless backslash-escaped.
Even if it's within quotes or a slash-delimited regex. The error will usually point to some place unrelated to the location of the #. (This nearly drove me nuts before I figured out what was causing the problem.)
