Great thanks to all those who have helped with our problem.

I should have done some more checking before I posted to the list. We were initially not using spamd/spoamc when I posted. After changing it to spamd/spamc it is able to process much more mail without as much CPU overhead, but we are still running into problems. I think without the other serivces on the machine would be fine for what we are trying to do, but the additional load of even spamc is able to cause problems, but it is not only spamc that is able to do this.
So, as a quick summary spamd/spamc is adding an not unreasonable amount of load right now, but being that we are pushing our machine near its limits to start with it is too much. I believe we are going to go ahead with it soon and in parallel to that plan on migrating to another machine as our timtable permits. This machine will in all likelyhood be a dual Athlon running Linux. In the long run the Linux box would most likely become our actual mail server and another machine may run spamd, but with the cost of Linux boxes we have much more flexibilty there.

Thank you again to all of the wonderful people on the list who had comments and suggestions. As I gather more useful information I would be happy to post to the list later to help others as they start and plan with it.

Thanks

Jeff
