I think I finally solved my problem. The culprit was
the auto-whitelist option '-a'. I changed my
SPAMDOPTIONS to
SPAMDOPTIONS='-d -c" 
in my /etc/sysconfig.
'| spamc' works like a charm together with spamd.

Thanks a lot to all of you for the tremendous help. I
still need to explore this auto whitelist option and
why does RedHat's SA configure the startup for auto
whitelist? It sure is confusing .....
