1) first make sure you have Net::DNS installed. This is the most common cause of the blackhole lists not being checked by spamassassin
2) using the sample mail from the SpamAssassin distro, run spamassassin -tD <sample_nonspam.txt make sure you get these lines in the output: debug: is Net::DNS::Resolver unavailable? 0 debug: is DNS available? 1 If you're still having troubles you can use tcpdump to watch outbound DNS queries while SpamAssassin runs.
