Well, you need something to interface spamassassin and sendmail. That's
what milter does for you. If you were doing delivery on the server, which
you're not from your description, you could use procmail or some such.
BTW: I don't personally use SA with a milter setup, but I've heard that
mimedefang has better SA support than spamassass-milter. It also lets
you "defang" windows worms and the like. :)
