I have noticed the same thing with version 2.41 and perl v5.6.1... however, I have never used the -m switch and the spamd process still dies under heavy traffic.
When spamd dies I see the following lines in my syslog:

Oct 9 08:20:27 mail-server spamc[12047]: connect() to spamd at 127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (1/3): Connection refused
Oct 9 08:20:29 mail-server spamc[12047]: connect() to spamd at 127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (2/3): Connection refused
Oct 9 08:20:30 mail-server spamc[12047]: connect() to spamd at 127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (3/3): Connection refused
Oct 9 08:20:31 mail-server spamc[12047]: connection attempt to spamd aborted after 3 retries

Like I reported before , this happened in 2.41 with Perl 5.6. And running
in debug didn't give any hints either. If I don't use the -m switch, the
problem will never occur. I upgraded to 2.42 and continued to not use
the -m switch, and I haven't had a crash once.

I maintain two relatively high volume mail servers both of which have
been using Spamassassin for some time mow. Everything has
always worked
fine and I have always upgraded to the newest stable versions
when released. I
upgraded to 2.42 on both of my servers (one is running postfix with
postbox the other sendmail with procmail) and on both server
the spamd
daemon died after several hours for no apparent reason
leaving nothing in
the logs as to indicate why. Has anybody else been having similar
problems? I have updated numerous times with no problems so I
am confused
as to what may have caused this with such a small version increment
(2.41->2.42). I have switched back to 2.41 for the time being
but would
love any suggestions or to hear from people having similar issues.

best regards,

Quinn

We installed 2.42 yesterday after having 2.31 for months. 2.31 was rock
solid...never died once. 2.42 spamd has died twice in the last 15 hours.

Like you, there is no cause of death indicated in syslog. I am currently
running spamd in debug mode, undaemonized, to make sure I see why it dies.

Redhat 7.2.
