First, try running spamd with the '-L' option.  That will disable
network checks in the first place.  Does spamc/spamd work then?  If
so, then Michael has pegged your problem.

The SA .deb recommends 'libnet-dns-perl', which apparently I have
installed.  (I am also using Duncan's package from sid)  If you want
to do the network checks, apt-get install libnet-dns-perl.
