It turns out that you should have checked the archives.  This has come up
a couple of times recently.  While a few expressed a desire for a
"separate update" functionality, akin (as I expressed) to a virus data
file update versus a scanning engine update, Craig brought up in

the caveat that we'd need to roll in a testing and quality control
structure, too; as the rules are distributed now, they get a chance to be
tested by folks pulling down CVS copies and by those who are doing the
writing themselves.

It sounds hopeful, so stay tuned.  In the meantime, be wary of grabbing
the latest batch and dropping them into place, especially if you have
previously built up the confidence to just drop the spam on the floor.
