You don't need license code you own to yourself. There also are/were many people who resented Sun and other companies taking BSD code private and never releasing back their contributions. At least with the GPL, there's a clear legal contract that derivative works (that are not kept local) must remain free. With the BSD license, all you can do is complain and hope.
