You're using an mbox format folder and you don't have proper locking
in place. This is nothing new with mbox. If you want to prove it to
yourself, open the folder with an editor and put a line beginning with
"From " immediately above the "missing" message. The 'From ' line is
supposed to have the format 'From <name> <date>'.
Also check the archives. This has been discussed to death in several
setups.
