I wrote a detailed explanation in HACKS. This will not be sent upstream
as it is an incomplete fix. Joerg hopes that this will go away once we
remove the compat code (if I understand correctly). I think this will
not happen soon, and we'll need to come up with a better alternative.

Perhaps gcc 5.x will let us do things in a simpler (less intrusive)
way.
