As a follow-up: I raised this concern on linux-man@ list some time ago. Linux manual pages try to document also other systems. While the intentions are good (to improve portability), the documentation often just ends up spreading misinformation. For instance, numerous notes about BSD systems that were written in the 1990s are just plain wrong today. Yet those are still presented in the Linux manual pages as facts. - Jukka.
