Hi,
I am only intermittently online - thus no reply for so long time.
burst is not nice to use (sends always 8 pkts at 0.5 pkt/sec per query)
- iburst (fast resending 0.5 pkt/sec when the filter is empty) is the
better choice - it is perfect for startup and recovery.
Synchronisation takes about 8-10 secs (4 replys until selection and set)
for setting the clock.
Thinking ntpdate is safe is risky. ntpdate could very well fail to find
valid servers and then the time would be wrong anyway (being
set then at a later time).
Given that and todays fast startup starting ntpd with -g and waiting the
previous ntpdate timeout period (or at least 10 seconds) should give us
functionally what we have today. If we really want to be sure we have a
valid time we need to pay attention to ntpdates return code (old scheme)
or check ntpd for synchronization. Requiring the time to be correctly
set may introduce arbitrary long delays during startup of
services in case we find no valid time source - this may not be what we
want,
Best regards,
Frank

With ntpd -g, it means that time will be messed up until the time is
first set (which isn't after the first measurement). There are
several polling intervals, about a minute apart, that have to happen
before ntpd believes the time
There is some "burst" option which should accelerate that.
best regards
Matthias
