SolrCloud supports this dynamic addition. SolrCloud makes copies of the source documents and every Solr instances does its own indexing. With replication, you only create the indexes once. When storing very large documents, this is worthwhile.
The only use cases I have seen for EmbeddedSolrServer that really makes sense is as Hadoop output.
