I had the same thought, for better or worse I feel like it's less commercial and more inclusive that we're talking about something on the "fringe" of the hyped topic (a fact about the character in the comic book that loosely inspired the show without actually mentioning the show itself). It's sorta an "in character" way to do something related to a trend. Of course I would say that as a Wikipedian who found that fact about 2 minutes and 3 clicks into looking up the show ;) but if others disagreed I don't mind much :)
