IMHO it doesn't make any sense for Apache SOAP to go down this the SAX direction .. that's exactly what Axis is - a re-impl of this stuff based on SAX. I believe the kind of perf improvements you guys have been doing are fully worth it though as there are many projects that use Apache SOAP and which would take some time to migrate to Axis (its not backwards compatible for one thing).
