No wonder you said "a bit slow" in the private email.

The SSL initial handshake is very slow, and without keeping the connection for 
multiple calls, your performance comes to a grinding halt. Once the 
connection is there, at is almost as fast as HTTP (except on dial-up where 
the modem does a marvelous compression job on text, but not the binary secure 
stuff).
