This is a typical limitation of the SAT layer of some USB bridges: ATA 
output registers are not properly returned as SCSI sense data.

For further diagnostics, please provide the output of the following 
command as an attachment:

smartctl -r ioctl,2 -i -H -n idle /dev/sdb
