If you are using slurmdbd that's too large a jump, you'll need to upgrade to an intermediate version first. This is because Slurm 18.08 only supports backwards compatibility for 2 versions (17.11 and 17.02) so you'd need to jump to one of them first (I'd suggest the last 17.11.x release).
