When using Moab, we used the standing reservation stuff to configure a
reservation on for specific nodes and only allowed these kinds of jobs. I
can't see an elegant way to do something like that in Slurm.
I can get close to the same functionality, if I make a reservation for each
weekday morning and then use a cron job to reconfigure partitions. I'll need
another cron job to reconfigure the partitions again in the evening.
We did something like this, with one, daily, reservation. The nodes were
part of two partitions: the general partition, and the "interactive"
partition. When the reservation is not active, jobs run normally in the
general partition. When the reservation was active, jobs could specify
the "interactive" partition and the reservation to run there.
We used one daily reservation for simplicity, so interactive jobs can
use the same reservation name always instead of having different
reservation names for every day of the week. The drawback is that the
reservation is also active during the weekends. But there might be some
people working in the weekends too (deadlines?), and the nodes will
still be available for normal work for at least 12 hours at night.
There was no need to reconfigure partitions, so nice and simple.
