Hi debbie,
I had some pictures, but Windows decided to eat the partition table
on my hard disk and away they went. I have extremely good backup
procedures, but I never expected to lose the whole disk in one shot.
When you say "mushy silver moss", is it a gray sludge that forms
only on the negative electrode?
The TDS tester reading is a problem, since we do not know the
internal calibration. So I don't know what "5" means. Can you get
some canning salt and add some to an ounce or two of your cs? Then
wait ten minutes and describe the strength of the dispersion.
For example, 20uS cs will show white clouds billowing up from the
bottom of the glass immediately after adding the salt. After ten
minutes, the whole solution will be white, but you can still see
your finger if you put it behind the glass.
For 3uS to 5uS cs, you may have to wait fifteen minutes, and it
barely shows a pale blue tint that is hard to see. You have to get
the light just right.
Normally, if you get the gray sludge, you are making pretty good cs,
but it can get contaminated with many thing. These can be the salt
in paper used to filter it, bits of stuff stuck at the bottom edges
of the generator, using a cleaning solution spray in the vicinity,
etc. It doesn't take much. For example, 1 ppm is the same as finding
a single penny in a stack one mile high:

So we have to learn good procedures to make and keep our cs strong.
Best Wishes,
Mike M
