YES! We do that every year.

We always cut our Christmas tree at the lot, so we probably start out 
with a freshness advantage over pre-cut trees.

As soon as we get it home I cut a couple of extra inches off the bottom 
to make sure we have a very fresh cut, then put it in the stand and 
fill it up with room temperature CS. If I don't have enough CS made up, 
I'll make up the balance with distilled.

If you get this first watering right, the tree will still be fresh when 
you want to take it down.

Be warned, the tree will drink a *lot* of water every day, so stay on 
top of keeping the stand filled. If it dries out even once, it's 
probably a goner.

We usually switched to tap water for the rest of the time. I add a few 
chugs of CS whenever I think about it, just in case.
