The archives were a free service of escribe.com, which started out as a partnership of several people and a group of volunteers. It never managed to succeed as a business model, and over time the staff dwindled until it's just one fellow keeping the server running for the benefit of one of his own web sites and out of a sense of obligation to the rest of us. That server crashed with a dead power supply, and his efforts to get a replacement supply met with little success, apparently. If we're talking some obscure older Unix hardware I can understand it being a problem. It wouldn't be just a matter of running down to the nearest PC parts dealer. Although I haven't heard anything in reply to my most recent inquiry, I suspect he's not been able to fix the hardware, and the idea of setting up a new server and transitioning the software and data to it is beyond his present resources of time and money. That's the story to the best of my knowledge. It's time to start over and do something new that'll be all under one roof, modernizes things, and improves the service -- while preserving access to all our previous discussions. Be well, Mike D.
