Just to add to this .... "free range" legally only means that the chickens had some sort of access to the outdoors. So there are large chicken farms that have 100's of chickens crammed into a building, with one small door leading to a 10' x 10' pen of dirt, that can label their eggs as "free range". What you really want are "pastured eggs", where the chickens are kept out on pasture. Since there's no legal definition for the term, though, the best thing is to talk to the farmer and find out how he/she raises their animals.
