Frank Key,
I used the verb "tarnish" as defined by Webster's " to dull the luster of , as a metallic surface by oxidation" While it is true that in certain trades tarnish is used in a more narrow sense, I prefer to use it as the result of a chemical attack of the surface of a metal resulting in a dulling of the luster.
Thx

Silver oxide is not tarnish. When silver tarnishes, it combines with sulfur
and forms silver sulfide. Silver sulfide is black.
