Hi all, I'm a newbie to this list, and I've been enjoying reading through some of the archives so far.
I've been using CS for several years to deal with all kinds of colds and illnesses. The most common explanation I'd read about how CS works is by inhibiting an enzyme that the microbes needed for respiration. Recently, though, a health practioner said that he'd been told at a seminar that CS works by triggering the release of an enzyme from our immune cells - myeloperoxidase. I haven't been able to find much linking CS with immune system function, except for an article that mentions that a previous study found that macrophages in the liver have binding sites for CS. (See Decker, K. 1990. Biologically active products of stimulated liver macrophages. Eur. J. Biochem 192: 245-261.) Does anyone know of a connection between CS, macrophages, and/or myeloperoxidase? Any thoughts? Thanks! Judith
