The only experience I've had with HVAC is this really bad 20,000 volt generator that a customer sent me that made emulsified mud in 4 minutes and would burn up in 6 minutes. [It might be HVDC..I ran it once and stashed it away] No controls on current at all. Current density on the electrodes was WAY up there.
I've been messing around with low frequency LVAC [square wave] and find that higher frequencies [under 30 seconds] at low voltages don't yield much more than excessive plateout and crap foating around if going for the higher PPMs. Lower frequencies [over 60 seconds] is very much like DC...except both of the elecrodes build up oxides and crud still gets blown off into the water. The crud does settle out in a few days resulting in what looks like very nice CS..but I can make the same thing without having to let crud settle out with straight DC in a lot less time. AC is always fighting itself to some degree, at some point. With higher frequencies like 60 CPS, very high voltage [5 to 50 Kv?] is needed to put enough velocity behind the ions so they don't just get sucked back onto the electrodes as plate out when the polarity changes. Other than that, [drawing on descriptions from those who do it] HVAC [with submerged electrodes] works just like LVDC, only a lot faster. An ion is an ion is an ion. If you let it 'run away', it runs really far and really fast, even to the point of boiling the water. HVAC/ HVDC open arc in an inert gas blanket might be different with some sort of electrosputtering thing going on. I design and sell generators for home use by people who [sometimes] barely know how to change a light bulb. I often get emails from people who are confused by the instructions. My response is..don't read them, just fill it with water, plug it in and wait. After you see what happens [or doesn't happen] , then read. I actually had one returned for refund because the person couldn't figure out how to plug it in. [They must have gotten help ordering it?] Generators running in the kilovolt range, while great for CS bottlers because they work fast and technicians because they have wonderful 'gee whiz' features, is a wrongful death lawsuit waiting to happen.
