As to saving water...

Around here spare cleanish water (mostly collected in a bucket when
waiting for the shower to heat up) is used for the house plants and
flushing the toilet.

Spare kitchen sink rinse water goes in a bucket for the outside plants.

Water from the weekly exchange in our indoor fish tank goes on the
outdoor plants (we have a high density tank so exchange 5 gallons a week).

With that we have fruit trees, veg and fruit in the garden, ducks,
chickens, and an outdoor fish pond yet still manage to be under our
drought allowance of water for a single family house.
