I remember my Grandmother had a cistern and would always use rain water,
but with all the crap in our air today I wouldn't think about using rain
water it is a shame though you can't. I don't even think it would be
safe to wash clothes in would it?

Rainwater is no longer good these days. When the shock and awe started in Iraq
and Afghanistan, they used depleted uranium which does not dissipate and is
hovering in earth's atmosphere. When it rains these DUs come with the rain
water. It is also in the air we breath. Wonder what else this DU causes.
