A couple of comments. There are several ways that silver is excreted from the body depending on the form the silver is in: 1) Small silver particles are filtered by the kidney. 2) Larger silver particles are removed by Kupffer cells in the liver. 3) Silver in solution is generally excreted in the liver bile by using glutathione (GSH) as a carrier molecule. Or a combination of the above. For example, silver compounds with a low solubility in water can have the portion of the compound in solution removed by the liver using glutathione as a carrier molecule while the portion not in solution is filtered out by the kidney. Many forms of selenium complex with silver, forming compounds that are nearly insoluble and cause the retention of silver in the blood and tissues. Additionally, silver compexing with selenium can cause a selenium deficiency leading to liver necrosis. However, it has been shown that at least one form of selenium does not complex with silver and that is selenomethionine. In addition, selenomethionine supports liver synthesis of glutathione thereby maintaining silver removal by glutathione. The primary reason to take selenomethionine is to maintain the biliary silver elimination pathway in the liver and the health of the liver. It is just my opinion but I think a good supplement to help eliminate silver from the body is glutathione. In addition to taking selenomethionine. As to how much selenium? Too much selenium can be toxic. Personally, I would take around 100 to 200 mcg a day. Unless one is fighting cancer where higher dose may be desirable. - Steve N

Any comments regarding usage of selenium with CS? Thanks in advance! From: Melly Date: Mon, 31 Aug 2009 21:44:29 -0700 (PDT) Just a reminder. When taking CS long term, it is suggested that one supplement with Selenium (methionine type - Me) so that S will usher the silver particles out of the body to prevent argyria.
