Hi MA, You get all the foreign material that they stuff into the canal cavity removed, along with the rotting ligaments and parts of previously healthy tissue and jaw bone that have necrotized in the toxic environment of the root canal. Also know as cavitation cleaning.
The foreign material in a root canal harbors bacteria and virus since there is no blood flow and no lymph fluid in it. It is a constant source of toxins feeding the body and bombarding the immune system. We get away with such barbarity when we are young and have some reserves to deplete in our immune system. As we age, health problems show up that would not be present if we didn't have the root canal toxin sources installed in our bodies. Of course, conventional "wisdom" says these problems are a "normal" part of getting older.
