I hate it when I do something like that- I had no clue.
On the plus side, there is a harbor freight not too far, and a radio
shack too. Maybe I can find the fuse, it ought to have one, it's not
the cheapest model.
I need to understand more about this stuff. I thought if it was DC, I
would be okay- but I guess not.

An ammeter across a voltage source is a dead short.
With luck, if you open it up, you'll find a blown fuse.
Harbor Freight often puts mmeters on sale for $2 or $3, but that won't
help you in the land of Oz.
I like to monitor current by measuring the voltage across a 1000 ohm
resistor in series with one of the circuit leads.
It's readout will be the equivilant current in milliamps.
