Hi Heather. The active ingredient in milk thistle has been
proven to regenerate liver cells. So I would give him that in
high doses indefinitely, if possible. Advanced liver problems
cause nausea, and that's probably why the poor thing doesn't
want to eat. Ginger seems to take away nausea. I get our ginger
capsules from my local Walmart. They're only a few dollars.
MGN-3 (comes from mushrooms, I believe), and CS or EIS, will do
wonders for his liver, but only if his liver problems are viral
in nature. I'm just wondering how you will be able to give him
supplements when he isn't eating? Maybe you could dissolve them
in some water or CS/EIS, and insert the water into his mouth by
enteral syringe? Or enlist the help of your vet? I hope he
gets better. It's so hard for us to see our animals
deteriorate, even when we know it's just their time. I have a
bunch myself. Good luck with it dear. Jodi

My beloved Andy is a 10 year old double-merle border collie

was looking to ease his arthritis with a prescription NSAID,
but when the panel came back with all 4 of the enzyme levels
high (2 were moderate last year), we couldn't do the
anti-inflammatory after all. So, we opted to try a month on
Sam-E and Milk Thistle, and the numbers have gone down, but
not very much. The vet is recommending an ultrasound & biopsy.
So I guess I have a few questions:
Does CS do much for the liver? Anyone have a dog whose liver
recovered with remedies other than drug therapy? Anything
particularly effective?
