In infinite wisdom Kiran Jonnalagadda said the following On 6/6/09 4:49 AM:

Incidentally, something I didn't grow up with and therefore encountered with
surprise in the homes of relatives: it is a great offense to serve rice
before any other item. Serving rice first apparently implies you're too poor
to eat anything else.

Is this common practice elsewhere?

A common practice that I saw with the South Indians was the use of right hand in serving food. Even my colleagues who had lived in hostels were very particular about this. Serving food with right hand is a common practice in North India as well, however I had not seen this being practiced in Delhi (where I stayed for 10 years) and almost forgotten about it. The South Indians were extremely particular about the use of right hand.
