Most of the books I would have suggested have been mentioned already.
The only ones that I'd add are:

- The Science of Diskworld I, II and III.

- Most stuff by John Gribbin

- Big Bang and Fermat's Last Theorem by Simon Singh

- Prisoner's Dilemma by William Poundstone
