Both Indian and Western music feature fretless stringed instruments across 
the audible spectrum, but if we must look for something that doesn't 
require years of practice to approach competence (and are willing to 
overlook the "purity" aspect), electronic synths can do all sorts of fancy 
things and can be made to sound damn good.

OTOH in a world where people still come to blows over whether Bach can be 
played on a piano instead of a harpsichord, I'm not holding my breath.
