I use a tool called ViewNX - from Nikon. Fairly decent picture manager and RAW reader. It lets you do basic posting of your RAW files (reads only Nikon Raw (NEF), obviously) and add tags/XML data to your images. You can then convert it to JPG, GIF, TIFF and PNG and do your Photoshop/Gimp things on it.
