So, history, hotel, hospital being words of foreign origin, Greek, French and French respectively, ought to be an history, an hotel and an hospital.
French itself makes a distinction between facultative and obligatory h's, which due to liaisons may also affect neighboring words, but I know neither (a) how faithfully this reflects the breathings for words of greek origin, nor (b) how faithfully the french mute h is reflected in english usage.
