Yes, but that's not much of a problem in practice. GSM encryption is effectively worthless (IMPI catchers, ahem), you probably can't reflash GSM module over air, and it doesn't allow you to put in surveillance hooks. Let's see what they'll do about IPsec and OpenVPN VPNs, though. If the main OS is trusted, and can't get malfirmware over air that's a major advantage in my book. (Hey, I don't trust my desktop when it's booted into a proprietary system, why should I trust a yet another computer which happens to be mobile?) > they're having a lot of trouble getting the GSM chipmakers to even > give them updated firmware for the GTA01. I think abandoning mobile > communications till ubiquitous wifi and a skype clone appear is the > only answer... I don't quite agree. I do use Symbian, and I do carry my mobile phone, I just don't trust the system's integrity, and don't say anything important over air, or even when the battery is is within the set. (If you think I'm overly paranoid, that's okay. You probably haven't been under telecommunication surveillance, and haven't made a short national secret list of potential troublemakers/ subversives. With the legal situation in Germany rapidly deteriorating with very little counterpressure from the grassroots it is only prudent to plan for the worst). -- Eugen* Leitl leitl http://leitl.org ______________________________________________________________ ICBM: 48.07100, 11.36820 http://www.ativel.com http://postbiota.org 8B29F6BE: 099D 78BA 2FD3 B014 B08A 7779 75B0 2443 8B29 F6BE
