Yeah, I think it's to represent that they have a soft, romantic side.
I also think that writing that sentence with tongue elsewhere than
cheek is an effective signal that one has a lack of imagination.  I
did take a date to a park in the evening recently, though, and it was
overlooking a beach.  I didn't see Eugen with his metal detector.

I live in Glen Park--the residents often like to call it "Glen Park
Village"--which adjoins Noe Valley and the Mission.

A few years ago I ran into some folks who work at WF in the financial
district, near where you mention.  We all thought that the street
number of their building (420) was highly amusing:
